Sacred Heart High's Christmas Foodbank
(27/01/22)
Posted by : Transform Our World

A group of year 7 pupils from Sacred Heart Catholic High school in Fenham, Newcastle have been planning, organising and buying food and sanitary provisions for their local food bank, Newcastle West End Foodbank.

This foodbank is one of the busiest foodbanks in the UK, providing food parcels to over 30,000 people annually.

The students have actively chosen to put their plans and funds organising a faith festival on hold in order to help provide provisions for vulnerable people in their community.

Since having this idea in early December 2021, the students were really driven to achieve this in time for Christmas.

Through delegation and team work, jobs such as researching what food was needed, online shopping and poster production to advertise the charity within school were all done with care, interest and passion.

Imogen did the painstaking task of carrying out her first online food shopping order at the age of 12! In the group’s last session before Christmas break, they filled the box and then decorated it with cheerful messages. This was a team effort with other members of the group wanting to get involved and share in the act of giving.

Both Rebecca and Kate were really moved by this activity and their outlook on people in their community has completely changed.

Rebecca says:

“I have a better understanding of how hard some people in our community’s lives are. It also makes me more grateful for what I have.”

Kate says:

“This activity was such a good opportunity to give other people things this Christmas. People who really needed help. It’s changed how I feel about others, and I feel more sympathetic.”

Now planning the year ahead, the group are continuing with their original idea of a Faith Festival within school. The project is evolving and is inclusive for all the pupils at Sacred Heart High.

Sacred Heart High School is supported by Transform Our World Youth Engagement Officer Rosie, funded by #iwill.
