This resource allows non-expert teachers to run climate negotiations without much preparation in standard lessons. Over the course of the activity, students use critical thinking to evaluate data, images and facts and interpret and relate country specific climate change and socioeconomic issues.
The resource consists of a mix of short films, online resources and materials for the classroom. Students are encouraged throughout to identify as a representative of their assigned country – one of 10 chosen because either they are responsible for large past or current greenhouse gas emissions, or because they are particularly vulnerable to the projected impacts.
They learn about that country in a homework exercise, then attend a series of ‘market places’ to collect information about adaptation, mitigation, the 2 degree target and global finance.
Subsequently, they prepare and present speeches to the assembled delegates, before there is an opportunity for bilateral and multilateral negotiations.
Finally, a powerful voting tool allows the students to see whether, together, they have done enough to limit climate change to a 2°C or even a 1.5°C warming and provided enough money to the Green Climate Fund.
This resource helps support the below Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
