Buy Now, Get Next Day: exciting opportunity for 10 secondary schools across the UK
(08/12/21)
Posted by : Global Action Plan

Global Action Plan have an exciting opportunity for students in 10 secondary schools across the UK to take part in a free one-day workshop that exposes and tackles the harmful trajectory of the growing ‘Buy Now, Get Next Day’ culture.

If you are interested in being involved, please read the details below and complete the short online form below and a member of the team will be in touch.

Why is this the focus?

Young people are being put under increasing pressure by advertisers and online platforms to buy, buy, buy. Meanwhile, the delivery of these items is leading to an increase in air pollution due to high numbers of vehicles on our roads. Both these issues are profoundly affecting young people’s health and wellbeing and threaten our natural environment.

Over the next 3 years, Global Action Plan will be working with young people across the country to build a youth led campaign, calling on businesses and government to take action and make necessary changes to policy and practices.

"You're going on an Instagram page full of models you're going 'I don't look like this'.[...] And then you're looking at all the people who have all the stuff that you don't have, and you're like 'I want this, but I can't have this.' That's not gonna make you feel positive at all, it just really like puts you in a little pit, and you're going a bit deeper and deeper every time you see something new"

- Xarea, aged 14

What is involved?

Each school will take part in a free one-day workshop for 30 students in years 9-11 between January and Easter 2022.

The workshop will be delivered at your school and will be facilitated by two members of Global Action Plan’s education team (fully DBS checked).

The interactive workshop will support students to:

  • Explore the issues associated with the Buy Now, Get Next Day culture, focussing on how young people are pressured and influenced to buy more stuff and on the impact air pollution from deliveries has on our health and the environment
  • Identify who is responsible and who has the power to make significant changes to this culture, focussing on the role of businesses and government
  • Understand the role and process of campaigning to help create change and young people’s right to speak out and be heard on matters that affect them.
  • Apply their learning to formulate their own campaign to help tackle the Buy Now, Get Next Day culture

Please note: This opportunity is open to 10 schools across the UK who must either have >20% of pupils receiving Free School Meals or be in an area of high air pollution.

If you would like to get involved, please complete this short online form and a member of the team will be in touch.
