A community of educators empowering students to take climate action

Climate Action and collaboration - working together to Transform Our World

Today is a day of climate action, with young people taking to the streets to protest about the environment and asking adults to support them. We need to listen. Today’s launch of the Transform Our World online hub helps teachers and educators answer this call.

Earlier this year, the teachers we work with told us they were uncertain how to respond to the climate emergency and how to channel the emerging surge of student energy. Not everyone is able to attend strikes, so there is a clear need to offer ways teachers can empower students to think globally and act locally from a school setting.

Global Action Plan knew that we needed to work in collaboration with others, rather than further confuse teachers by duplicating resources. We wanted to make it easier for teachers to embed high quality, curriculum relevant and impactful social and environmental action programmes into the classroom. So we worked with a wide range of organisations such as WWF, RSPB and Eco-Schools who are experts at inspiring young people to protect the natural world through school programmes.

The Transform Our World hub is a result of the combined efforts of our partners and teachers; the free, high quality, low prep activities and projects are teacher-reviewed and tested. There are dedicated resource areas on the hub for STEM, Outdoor Learning, Sustainable Development Goals and local community action, as well as a monthly themed campaign focus to share with users.

Global Action Plan created Transform Our World as part of our pledge to the #iwill campaign (it is supported by the #iwillFund). It will be a chance for teachers who are on a collective mission to connect with one another, and to encourage their whole school to get involved in youth green social action, embedding it in school life and culture.

This climate outrage is not going to go away. Young people are angry, scared and taking a stand for the planet. In the long term we need to think about what being a sustainable school really means, and look to support the transforming pioneers already exploring what is possible in the school system. But the first steps will be to ensure teachers and educators feel ready and able to empower young people immediately. With an expanding resource library and a growing teacher community, Transform Our World is a space for teachers to respond to this growing enthusiasm for climate action.
