Young people help advise on research being undertaken by Global Action Plan and the University of Bath

Individuals from Global Action Plan’s Young Activators Network recently had the opportunity to share their thoughts and advise on the latest research being conducted in partnership with the University of Bath.

The research project explores young people’s values – the beliefs they have about what is most important in life, and how these values influence their attitudes towards social and environmental issues. The project builds on empirical evidence that when young people feel as though others share the same values as themselves, it supports them in feeling a greater sense of connectedness and hope for the future.

It is hoped that by implementing an intervention which helps young people to discover their shared values, and agree on tangible goals to help protect the environment, it will help to increase young people’s sense of hope and willingness to take environmental action.

Throughout the duration of the research project, Global Action Plan and the University of Bath have worked closely with a group of young people who have formed the study’s Youth Advisory Panel. Having inputs from young people of a similar age to individuals who will be completing the study has been integral to ensuring that the materials provided are as engaging and accessible as possible.

In July, seven young people aged 12-18 joined Ellie Moore, Programme Officer at Global Action Plan, and Philip Howlett, Research Associate at the University of Bath, to advise on several taster animation clips and accompanying scripts. The research team were keen to hear the young people’s thoughts on the videos’ visuals, tone and storytelling elements.

Since hearing from the young people, work is being done to collate this feedback to create a full-length video animation, which the young people will have the opportunity to advise on in September when they meet again.

Having young people feed directly into the research project has been fundamental not only to collecting meaningful data, but also to ensuring that students who participate in the study find real meaning in discussing and exploring their shared values - and their role in shaping a better world.
