Anti-vaping awareness at Deal Parochial Church of England Primary School
Students at Deal Parochial Church of England Primary School in Kent have been busy working on projects to benefit people and planet, with the support of Youth Engagement Practitioner, Liz Hayes.
With a focus on empathy and compassionate values, the projects that the young people designed showed they had their own community's wellbeing at heart, that they cared for nature and connected with their communities and families.
Here's how they have been transforming their world and school community throughout the 2023/24 school year.
Anti-vaping awareness
Year 6 students Henry and Morgan were both motivated to begin their project by personal experiences in their families. They decided they wanted to raise awareness of the harms of vaping to young people. This was in part because they have noticed how popular vaping seems to have become in recent years and because they both have family members whose health has been impacted by vaping. This motivated them to try to protect others.
They decided to create large posters to display at school, and recruited some artistic members of the class to their group who enjoy drawing to provide the illustrations.
Other members were tasked with researching facts about the harms vaping can cause to young people. Henry created a PowerPoint presentation with additional facts about the harms of vaping, and this was shown alongside the posters at the Year 6 showcase event in January.
Help for sea creatures
Katherine loves sea creatures and wanted to do something to raise money for a charity that supports them. She also enjoys finger knitting, and decided to combine these interests by knitting woolly creatures to sell at school to raise funds. She found another of her friends, Ophelia, could also finger knit, and so they both embarked on creating items to sell, using second hand wool purchased at a charity shop.
The group which formed eventually settled on fundraising for WWF, as this charity supports all animal life and nature.
They also decided to sell cakes and hand decorated wooden bookmarks to boost the funds raised. Uliana – who has joined the school from Ukraine – is finding it quite hard to learn English, but found a way to join in with the activities through her artistic skills, intricately decorating bookmarks with flowers and animals.
Tea party
‘Family’ came up as the value many members of the class ranked highly and this led to the idea of a ‘Grandparents tea party’, in order to share a bonding experience with their families.
The members of this group designed invitations, planned activities, baked cakes, made sandwiches and set up the tables for the event. In the end the invitation was widened to include some mums, dads, aunties and uncles, and everyone sat down together to enjoy the tea party.
Everyone got stuck into the craft activity afterwards, decorating terracotta flowerpots and saucers together. For some it was the first time they had done anything like this with their grandparents.
Overall, it was a big success, with lots of compliments from the families and happy faces from the children involved.
They showed such care and compassion for their communities, included others, and raised awareness of health harms, as well as learning about working together to take action and create change.

Tombola
Bobby, Jaylen and Leon wanted to fundraise for Cancer Research UK, and after exploring a few different ideas settled on holding a tombola. They formed a group with a few other class members and asked parents and teachers for donations.
This embraced the idea of being sustainable, as they were making use of unwanted gifts, rather than purchasing new items.
The group all got involved in sorting and labelling the items with tickets, then helping out on the stall. They raised over £100 on the day, then sold some of the goods the following day and a parent donated the difference to make it up to a full £150.
Young changemakers
Students were asked whether they'd like to continue their journey as changemakers. Here are some of their responses :
'Yes because it was so fun, and you know you are changing the world!'
'I would because you could really make a difference to our world and let people know about our world and spread it to everyone so maybe they could help.'
'Yes because you can help others understand more about the world and help to make the world a better and safer place for us, and wildlife.'
