What I enjoyed about Values to Transform Our World
(15/11/21)

Transform Our World Youth Summit Ambassador Silvia shares what she enjoyed about day 2 of the Summit.

Values day was all about listening to your true values and looking at what matters to us and how we can implement them in our daily lives. Listening to our true values can influence important decisions made for your country, city or town and individual actions made to change the world around you.

The first session that I watched was Get Inspired with Ecolola Sustainability. It talked about intersectionality in the context of environmentalism. It showed me that nothing stands alone and that understanding these connections and links is vital when talking about climate change and climate justice and equity. It was interesting to learn about the impacts the changes we make will have according to the links and connections associated with the climate crisis.

Next, I watched Back from COP with the UKSSN. This was such an inspiring session which was led by sixth form students (who are part of the UKSSN) from across the country who had a chance to go to COP26 in Glasgow. They spoke about their individual experiences and how they would implement what they had learnt moving forward. COP26 is such a key place in terms of the climate crisis and having the opportunity to listen to young people's experiences was interesting and empowering.

After that, I watched Be the Change with ThoughtBox. This session spoke about the importance of living by your true values and listening to your heart and gut feeling. The session showed a videoed interview of Yurac Fiedler where she talked about loving yourself and how she believed self-love was a true measure of success. It was a moving session which encouraged me to think about who I was and what I wanted to do in the future and how to link the two together to be the change I want to see in the world.

Finally, I watched Get Inspired with Pangaea Finn. In this session, Pangaea Finn (founder of the Orangutan Gang) talks about the impacts of palm oil on orangutans. I was shocked by the figures presented in this event and it left me feeling frustrated but motivated to make change. I was shocked that so many products had palm oil in them (from shampoo to biscuits). I felt outraged that companies used derivatives of palm oil just to make themselves seem greener.

It was such an empowering and interesting day and I learnt so much from listening to the different sessions and events.
