Student takes the lead in delivering Good Life Schools sessions

Wolsingham School in County Durham has taken a unique approach to running their Good Life School group – instead of a teacher delivering the sessions, a student has taken the lead.

The group is made up of around 12 pupils ranging from 11 to 14 who meet weekly for a working lunch and to explore the Good Life resources, prompting lively discussion and generation of ideas for projects. Supported by Geography teacher Mr Heath, Year 10 student Melody regularly takes the lead in these sessions, hosting discussions and running group activities.

Melody decided to get involved with the programme as it’s something that she really connects with;

“I’m the only one (in Good Life Schools) in my year group. I’m really passionate about it and really want to help our school” she said.

Currently there are suggestions around setting up a community herb garden, where members of the local community can help themselves to herbs grown by the group. There is also talk of chickens!

A topic that Melody is particularly interested in is fast fashion as she says so many of the pupils are “big on fast fashion” shopping regularly at high street chains that sell clothes cheaply.

“We are so blinded by the need to buy the newest things to be accepted, when really life is more about experiences” she said.
