Stitching Skills for Life at Ecclesfield School, Sheffield
(22/04/26)

Who knew losing a button could lead to something so brilliant?

Students at Ecclesfield School in Sheffield recently rolled up their sleeves (some slightly frayed!) for a hands-on workshop with the fantastic local organisation Darns and Yarns. Led by Carmel, the session was packed with practical skills, creativity, and plenty of inspiration.

As part of the school’s Good Life Schools Project, students have been tackling a real issue: damaged uniforms. From missing buttons on cardigans to worn-out jumper cuffs, these everyday problems often mean uniforms get thrown away—costing around £25 to replace and adding to unnecessary waste.

But not anymore.

During the workshop, students learned how to sew on buttons and repair cuffs using a blanket stitch —simple skills that make a big difference. Instead of binning their uniforms, they now have the confidence to fix them, saving money and helping the planet at the same time.

And that’s not all. The project also includes introducing replaceable clips for school ties, meaning broken ties won’t automatically end up in the bin either. It’s all about smart, sustainable solutions.

Carmel didn’t just teach sewing—she brought stories to life. Through a beautiful and thought-provoking fable about a child whose grandfather made and adapted his clothes as he grew, students explored the emotional value of clothing and the importance of reusing and repurposing what we already have.

What makes it even more inspiring? Carmel lives this message every day. She hasn’t bought a new item of clothing in over eight years, instead repairing and creatively mending her wardrobe to make it last.

This was more than just a workshop—it was a lesson in creativity, sustainability, and independence.

A huge well done to the students of Ecclesfield School for embracing the challenge, and a big thank you to Darns and Yarns for delivering such an engaging and meaningful experience.
