Project Planet at North Harringay School in London have been getting stuck in to improve their roof garden!
Ten students from Years 5 and 6 have been meeting after school to share and explore how they can make a difference to their local environment. Having learned about values and each other’s passions, they took a walk around school to see which areas they could improve. The group came up with a range of ideas, such as planting a tree, tackling plastic consumption, and creating a wild space.
The group carefully researched the ideas and compiled all their notes. After voting on their ideas and checking if they could get permission, the group decided that the most effective project they could undertake would be to improve their roof garden, with the aim of improving biodiversity.
The group have been hard at work to find out what materials and resources they need to get started. They have recently ordered a composter, soil, and various seeds to be planted. They have also bought a bug hotel and can’t wait to assemble it, and are also very eager to potentially make their own too!
Since their very first session, Project Planet have been eager to get their hands dirty. It was hard work clearing weeds to make space to plant flowers, but the group got stuck in. They put the weeds into their new composter and also carefully placed any insects they found in new areas. The group are ready to get planting!
Stay tuned to find out how the group get on and what flowers they have decided to plant.
