Meet the YCS host schools: Worle Community School
(09/11/20)
Posted by : Transform Our World

At Worle Community School Academy we have a passionate group of environmentalists and are leading the way in schools locally. Our Climate Justice Revolution student group formed 2 years ago, inspired by Greta Thunberg and when people around the world started to mobilise against the damage being done to our world. Several students wanted to make a difference, but were also aware of the arguments against the strikes. They wanted to prove that students could come up with solutions, and act in ways that would promote sustainability; thus Climate Justice Revolution was born. It is our ambition for WCSA to have sustainability and the environment at the very heart of school life.

So far we have achieved huge improvements:

  • Our restaurant began a journey to being plastic-free and banning single use plastics;
  • Recycling centres were set up around school, including for stationary;
  • TPLT, the trust we are a part of, has included sustainability in its 3 year plan;
  • Two electric vehicle charging points have been installed onsite for staff to use;
  • We are in the process of installing solar panels that will provide all of our electrical energy needs and will feed back into the grid;
  •  We are now pushing for a more ambitious carbon target of a 10% reduction per year, with an ambition to join the "Let's Go Zero" campaign;
  • We are working rapidly towards our eco-schools green flag award;
  • We are helping local schools to set up their own CJR groups by setting up a local eco-network.

We are really delighted to be a part of something as exciting and transformative as the Youth Climate Summit, and are excited about the transformations we can develop in the coming school year.
