Our promises of kindness diagram

Year 6 at Our Lady & St Anne's Primary in Newcastle began their project work by pledging a promise of kindness to demonstrate the importance of kindness and compassion to others.

Following on from this, we explored the United Nation’s goals for Sustainable Development where the students discovered that their primary goals for this project were to reduce inequalities, take climate action and promote peace and health across their school and community.

The class showed their compassion by taking part in Roksana, Maryam, Aisha and Amana’s project idea of creating origami doves to promote awareness and thoughts of peace to the people of Ukraine.

An extremely tricky but rewarding craft, the final doves look amazing, and will be distributed around the community to share the class’s hope for peace.

Messages written on the doves also prompt people to donate to their chosen charities on JustGiving, Global Action Plan’s Education Not War and CAFOD’S Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Passionate about animals, their habitats and the devastation caused by deforestation the students have not only sponsored a giant panda through the charity WWF, but will also be filling the school’s bathrooms with bamboo loo roll to reduce their school’s impact on deforestation.

To help promote clean and tidy habitats and community spaces year 6, pioneered by Jay J also carried out a massively successful litter pick, collecting well over 10 bags full of rubbish. The students made a real difference to their local area.

I am looking forward to keeping you posted on the outcomes of their letters to local councillors about this issue, as well as Musa, Alazar, Patrick, James, Jason, Yazmin and Henriett’s project for helping local homeless people which will be taking place soon.
