Freedom to breathe - supporting every child's right to clean air

Global Action Plan is delighted to be launching an international campaign this month on children’s rights to clean air.

Freedom to breathe will empower children to join together to call on the United Nations to acknowledge their fundamental right to clean air.

Despite the risks that polluted air poses to children’s health and development, clean air is not among children’s rights defined by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

As part of this campaign, a school’s programme is educating children on the importance of breathing clean air and what they can do to minimise their exposure to common sources of harmful pollution.

This is being delivered through local delivery partners in cities from each of the four surveyed countries which have some of the worst levels of recorded pollution – London, Beijing, Delhi, and Los Angeles.

The young people’s call for change to create a world where children’s right to clean air is undisputed, widely known and acted upon will be supported by a coalition of businesses, academics and civil society organisations.

While the focus of the campaign here in the UK is on London, we welcome all UK schools to take part and we’re encouraging teachers and students to join the online events.
