students discovering the greenhouse

Our group of year eight students from Benfield High School in Newcastle Upon Tyne have finally received the feedback they needed from senior management for the approval of a greenhouse and veg plot. Calling themselves  ‘Smiling together with the World’, the group were thrilled to have their requests granted, and discover that there is already an old greenhouse no longer in use. They sprinted outside to explore the school grounds and there it was! Overgrown and full of leaves, but with so much potential. There are old compost bins, flower beds and even tools. James who is Project Coordinator of ‘Team Grow’ was “Overjoyed! And I’m so pleased that our project budget can now be spent on plants instead’.

James and researcher Jason spent the remainder of the session researching and choosing what plants to grow. They had a fantastic time finding plants with group members names in them including a tribute to our lead teacher Nicola Williams, by choosing a late cropping potato variety called ‘Nicola’. The group also found a beautiful yellow flower named after another member of the group called ‘Happy Emily’.

Emily, project coordinator of ‘Young Planet Savers’ took delivery of 50 reusable drinking bottles to be issued around school.

Emily said: I’m ecstatic they’re here! I can now do creativeness” and quickly got to work producing stickers with the school logo on them, as well as producing posters to begin a campaign on plastic pollution in preparation for the sale of the bottles. The money raised will go to charity.

The cherry on top of a fantastic session was a group decision to form a ‘super group’ going forwards into the rest of the school year. The students aim to share and help with all group activities collectively, ensuring the ‘Smiling together with the World’ will be able to continue running into 2022 and beyond.
