London Schools Eco Network

The London Schools Eco Network (LSEN) was the first regional network to set up, starting with just two schools in Hammersmith in 2019. There are now over two dozen secondary schools involved from across the capital.

Students meet fortnightly for an hour on Thursday evenings to share ideas and resources, plan joint projects and hear about local initiatives. They also attend talks and other events together. Students produce joint newsletters and assemblies and run their own social media accounts. A staff group meets regularly online and in person.

  Aims

• As part of our commitment to sustainability, we aim for all schools involved in our network to sign up for Let's Go Zero and secure the Eco-Schools Green Flag  award.

• All schools joining the network make a commitment to taking steps to ensure they become as green as possible (such as covering environmental issues both inside and outside the curriculum and forming environmental committees within the school).

• We focus on education, given our insider status regarding schools and our connections with teachers. We can share what has worked to help others make changes in their schools.

• We especially hope to exert pressure on our schools on the issue of education on topics such as the climate crisis and sustainability for younger students, who we feel should be introduced to and given a comprehensive education on such a critical topic early on. We can do this by giving assemblies and sharing opportunities with our peers.

• We aim to get all students involved, spreading awareness and sparking conversation with everyone, especially those who are not that interested or involved in climate issues.

• While all schools within the LSEN are secondary schools, we may also use our ties to primary schools to try and influence education for students at that age too. We also encourage more schools to join the LSEN (if in London) or the UKSSN (if elsewhere in the UK), especially state schools.

• We will plan campaigns together to promote sustainability in our schools, for example 'Sustainable Santa' and 'Fast Fashion Free February'
