Aim

To spark a green mindset in staff by developing a customised behaviour change campaign with the objective of achieving energy savings, improving waste separation and engaging staff in environmentally sustainable behaviours, in alignment with DBS's corporate identity.

The Challenge

The energy use at DBS was identified as being too high. Both system administrators and end users were noted as causes of this problem.

Opportunities were identified around air conditioning cold spots, equipment being left switched on and items not being recycled appropriately.

Skills Developed
  • Techniques for staff engagement
  • Time management - to run the campaign on top of regular workloads
  • Communication methods
  • How to work with senior management

"Through gamification, we learned and encouraged one another on how the trash should be disposed without contamination in the transparent bins allocated"

The Solution
  • A pre-launch event that tapped into an existing company event (Star Wars Day) engaged lots of staff on energy saving and environmental sustainability through quizzes and a whack-a-mole game.
  • Eco-heroes volunteers from departments across the business acted as ambassadors and set an example for their colleagues.
  • Eco-Cup Competition pitted staff on different office floors of the building against each other to see who could improve their energy saving and recycling rates the most. Staff were given interim updates on each floor’s progress, with prizes given to the top floors.
  • Technical changes, e.g. raising the air con temperature in places and addressing cold spots.
Key Insights
  • Staff are motivated to save energy or money when participating in intitiatives to drvie environmentally sustainable behaviours
  • Staff are more likely to care for the environment if it will make their workplace or home a better place to be in.
  • Personal recognition and rewards acted as a motivator so the team knew they could engage others using prizes.
  • It was important to get everyone onboard as staff are greatly influenced by their peers.
  • Gamification was an effective engagement technique.
  • A targeted communication plan is key.
